Capsules vs Tinctures

Any one of these forms are powerful in delivering the benefits and nutrition of herbs to your body, it’s really a matter of preference.

What about Capsules

Capsules are made of vegetable or gelatin and are usually filled with powdered herbs, this is a convenient method of herbal therapy since they can conceal bitter tasting herbs.

Capsules take about 20-30 minutes to digest, and get into the bloodstream, they’re not as absorbable as tinctures.  You can also open capsules and add the contents into food or drinks. If you have a difficult time swallowing or digesting capsules, that’s when using a tincture would be ideal.

What about Tinctures

Tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts made with alcohol that pulls out the active components of an herb, vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar is another method of extracting herbs, these methods also act as a preservative.

Due to the high concentration, you only need to take a small amount, 15 to 30 drops to get the benefit, (a full dropper is equivalent to 30 drops). Tinctures that use vegetable glycerin for extraction, instead of alcohol, have a much more palatable taste, and children usually don’t mind the mild, sweet taste that has a syrup-like consistency. Can easily add to water, juice, or tea.

Alcohol based tinctures have a shelf life of 7 years or more, whereas vegetable glycerin based tinctures have 2-3 years of shelf life. Tinctures should be stored in a cool, dark place, out of direct sunlight or near heat.

If you are sensitive to taste, or have never tried a tincture before, we would recommend the capsules, or tinctures made with vegetable glycerin.

Because they’re taken directly under the tongue, they enter the bloodstream faster than other methods, so you may notice its effects sooner.

Many people are unfamiliar with taking herbal medicine in tincture form because they simply aren’t as common in traditional western medicine.
